Umno Batu Kawan deputy chief, Datuk Paduka Khairuddin Abu Hassan on Friday lodged a police report over 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) after a series of criticisms leveled against the company the company, was ‘ignored’.

Founded by the government in 2009, the company was created for the purpose of collecting funds through foreign investments targeted at national projects as well as creating bonds.

The company, has recently been ‘under fire’ especially after the former Finance Ministers -- Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tun Daim Zainuddin – had criticised the company over its mismanagement of taxpayers' funds. The opposition, notwithstanding has also questioned the company's business, transactions, investments decisions.

Recently, 1MDB had allegedly reported a loss of a staggering RM38 billion.

Last month, 1MDB announced that all its investments had been managed in a prudent and professional manner and above it all the company is in a stable position to pay all its debts.

The police report made by Khairuddin among others demanded a full investigation on the company to determine the reasons behind the irregularities of its financial management of taxpayers’ funds.

Khairuddin said he will be making a report to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

Who is Khairuddin Hassan?

Born in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, Khairuddin is a businessman and he is married to famous Malaysian TV/film/theatre actress, Umie Aida.

Khairuddin is the nephew of Pulau Pinang Sulaiman Ahmad Palestin and the cousin of Pakatan Rakyat de facto leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Khairuddin has always been viewed as ‘different’ from other Umno members who regard him as 'bold' especially in voicing opinions.

For the record, this is not the first time he has taken action against something he felt was 'wrong', such as lodging a report against 1MDB, said Khairuddin.

When Anwar (Ibrahim) who was then Deputy Prime Minister and had the undivided support of many Umno members, Khairuddin took a bold move and published a book entitled, “50 Dalil Kenapa Anwar Ibrahim Tidak Boleh Jadi PM” (50 Reasons Why Anwar Should Not Be PM).

“At the time most Umno members including the president had backed Anwar wholeheartedly, I was alone in this fight with only few of my friends with me,” he said.

Khairuddin has made headlines in the past after he appeared during Anwar’s first sodomy trial in 1998 together with the late Khalid Jafri, co-writer of “50 Dalil Kenapa Anwar Ibrahim Tidak Boleh Jadi PM” and the Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali’s sister, Umi Hafilda.

As a board member of LBCN Development Sdn Bhd, Khairuddin filed a defamation suit for RM500 million against the former Selangor Menteri Besar, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim in November, 2009.

On the report lodged against 1MDB, Khairuddin said he is prepared for any reaction from the Umno Supreme Council, the party's disciplinary committee, as well as the party secretary-general.

"If they said they want to take disciplinary action towards me, I then want to ask the Umno supreme leaders, on what grounds are action being taken against me?

“I came to Dang Wangi police station to lodge a report against 1MDB (a private company. I did not make a report against Umno, I did not make a report against the President of Umno (and) I did not make a police report against the Finance Minister of Malaysia,” he said.

Principally, he said that the impending full investigation to be conducted on 1MDB, “is not wrong”.
