Heavy rain since early today caused floods in the city's major roads and housing areas, but they did not necessitate the evacuation of residents.

Among the affected areas were Taman Sri Intan, Taman Alamanda 1, 2 and 3 as well as Jalan Serating-Merchang.

A resident in Taman Alamanda, Mazlan Awang, 48, said his house was flooded to a depth of 0.3 metre due to the heavy rain since 4am.

"The last time this area was flooded was in 2009 but this time it's more serious, maybe due to the drainage problems," he told Bernama when met here.

Kuala Terengganu Fire and Rescue Station chief Che Shaari Abdullah said there had been no evacuation so far as the situation was still under control.

Meanwhile, Civil Defence Department (APM) deputy director (operations) Amirsarafudin Zalman said the flooded roads were triggered by high tide, which occurred early today.

He said state disaster operations room had been opened today for the dissemination of authentic and latest information on floods to the public and media.

The public can obtain information about the current status of flooding via the website http://etindakan.terengganu.gov.my/ or call the operations room at 09-6236655 or 09-6236644. -- BERNAMA
