The Health Ministry will step up monitoring of date products in the local market after photographs of dates contaminated with cockroaches and beetles went viral on social media.

Director-General of Health Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement today said consumers should study the product label and make it a habit to inspect and smell before consuming the products to avoid eating harmful and contaminated foods.

"Consumers and the public should exercise their rights in ensuring that the products they purchase are clean and safe," he said.

He said consumers who have any concerns regarding food safety issues, can contact the state health department or the nearest district health office.

"Consumers can also visit the ministry''s website at http://moh.spab.gov.my or the Food Safety and Quality Division Facebook page at www.facebook.com/bkkmhg if they wish to lodge complaints related to hygiene and food safety," he added.
