Recently, a sedition investigation was launched by the authorities against a secondary school boy who apparently liked a ‘I Love Israel’ Facebook page.

According to news reports, his teachers and schoolmates have also thrown threats at him, including calling for him to be burnt.

I have several issues with this that is causing me some stress and one of the biggest is the fact that it seems like it is so wrong for someone to have a differing opinion.

So what if the boy loves Israel? He could love it for many reasons. It could be the beautiful beaches the country has, the advance IT, etc.

Whatever happened to freedom of opinion and freedom of expression? I always thought we were allowed to have individual thoughts and ideas.

But as far as the news reports that have been going around, it doesn’t seem like the boy really loves Israel anyway.

Another issue I have is that many people like many different Facebook pages for many reasons. I am one of those people.

I like pages that I support for example musicians and bands that I like to listen to, events and activities that I want to go to, etc.

But I also like pages that I don’t support. I follow the pages of many political parties that I don’t like just so that I can keep up to date with whatever they are doing.

Heck, I even follow the Kardashians’ Facebook page just so that I can laugh at all the ridiculous things they do in their apparently interesting lives.

And, by actually launching an official investigation, don’t people think that this is blowing things of proportion for something so insignificant?

It’s a like of a Facebook page! Think about it! Sure, some people will say that it is a sensitive issue during a sensitive time. But, it’s just liking a Facebook page!

Then there is the call for violence against the boy. And by teachers, nonetheless! How old are these teachers? Five? Don’t they have an ounce of matured judgment at all?

What kind of teacher calls for a student to be burnt? I would say that a threat like that is a far worse crime than just liking a Facebook page.

It’s similar to how wrong it is when people decide to not just boycott establishments like McDonald’s and Starbucks, but to also vandalise the outlets.

And worse still, they also hurl abuse on the staff who work there. So many got harassed, spit on and had their cars smashed.

Now is that the right thing to do? If an investigation is to be done, it should really be on the teacher for her apparent threats on the student.

If the teacher had something against the student’s action, couldn’t she have just gone and spoken to him and share her thoughts instead?

I’m not in support of Israel’s Zionist agenda. But I am not in support of violence either, or even the curbing of individual thoughts and opinions.
