The Global Movement of Moderates Foundation (GMM) congratulated Fatah and Hamas, as the two Palestine’s leading political parties agreed on a new reconciliation deal, after a tough seven-year rivalry.

Based on a press statement by the Chief Executive Officer of GMM, Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, the latest reconciliation agreement is an important step forward in strengthening unity and democracy of the Palestinians.

Saifuddin said, this agreement “could see a new unity administration formed within the next few weeks, followed with a general election.”

He added that “a unified Palestine that upholds greater democracy will further enhance the peace negotiations in that region.”

According to a Fatah spokesman, Fayez Abu Eitta, “an interim government could be finalized in the next five weeks, with elections possible by early 2015.”

GMM is an idea articulated by the Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Najib Tun Razak in 2010 during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. It is aimed at rallying the moderates worldwide to reclaim the centre stage and marginalising the discordant voices of extremism.
