Former executive chairman of Tenaga Nasional Berhad Tan Sri Dr Ani Arope died at the Subang Jaya Medical Centre, near here today.

Ani, 82, died before dawn due to prostate cancer, according to his granddaughter, Suraya Ali, 32, when contacted by Bernama.

Born on May 17, 1932 in Sungai Bakap, Seberang Prai, Penang, Ani is survived by his wife, Puan Sri Saenah Ahmad and three children besides several adopted children.

His remains were placed at the TNB Islamic Centre in Bangsar and is expected to be laid to rest in Shah Alam at noon.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak conveyed his condolences to Ani's family.

"My condolences to the family of TS (Tan Sri) Ani Arope who passed away this morning. May his soul be placed among the believers. Al-Fatihah," he said in his Twitter posting.

Ani was TNB executive chairman from 1992 to 1996 besides having been chief executive of several private companies, a higher institution of learning and various organisations.
