The Kelantan police on Saturday issued stern warning that action would be taken against those who spread false information on the floods in the state.

State police chief Datuk Mazlan Lazim said the dissemination of false information on the floods, including through WhatsApp and Facebook, could impede works to rescue flood victims.

He referred to a report on a tahfiz student said to have drowned in Rantau Panjang, which turned out to be false.

"We will take stern action against those responsible because false news like that can create anxiety among the public," he told reporters after visiting flood victims at the relief centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Gual Tinggi, Rantau Panjang here.

Also present was Pasir Mas police chief ACP Haliluddin Rahim.

In a related matter, Mazlan advised residents in Pengkalan Kubor, Tumpat, to be prepared in for the floods with the water level in Sungai Golok still at the danger level.

Meanwhile, he said the search for a baby girl who slipped from her mother's arms while the woman was wading through the flood water in Kampung Sepertang, Kuala Krai, last Thursday, would continue.

The incident occurred about 3am while the woman was wading the flood water to go to an evacuation centre.
