A fire broke out at the Kamdar department store on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman last night, forcing more than 100 staff and customers to be evacuated.

No injury was reported in the 7.20pm fire, believed to have started at the switch room on the first floor.

“The fire broke out on the first floor where the switch room was located. Upon checks, we think the switch board caught fire," said City Fire and Rescue Department deputy director Azizan Ismail

“We managed to put out the fire on the first floor but it has spread up to the fourth floor.”

Over 90 fire and rescue personnel, including members from the Kuala Lumpur City Hall rescue unit, responded to the incident.

Ten fire trucks were used to bring the fire under control in about an hour. The cause of the incident and damages incurred is being investigated.
