Efforts are ongoing to have convicted murderer Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar extradited to Malaysia from Australia where he has been arrested for an immigration offence, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Noor Rashid Ibrahim said here today.

He said there were certain regulations to be observed before Sirul Azhar, convicted along with another policeman for the murder of Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu, could be brought back to Malaysia.

"We have to observe regulations; we have referred to the Attorney-General's Chambers to have him brought back to face his (death) sentence," he told reporters after a post-flood 'gotong royong' programme at the Taman Kiara police housing estate here.

The Federal Court had overturned a Court of Appeal decision and upheld a High Court decision in 2009 convicting Sirul Azhar and Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri of the murder of Altantuya in 2006.

Sirul Azhar was not present when the Federal Court delivered its judgement on Jan 13 and the court issued a warrant for his arrest.

Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar confirmed that Sirul Azhar was arrested by the immigration authorities in Brisbane, Australia.

Noor Rashid said the Malaysian police were working well with the Australian authorities in the matter.
