A family traveling from Paya Terubong to Balik Pulau faced a critical moment when their car was crushed by a boulder which suddenly collapsed when passing through Jalan Tun Sardon in Penang on Saturday afternoon.

During the incident which took place at around 2.15 pm, the vehicle - a Volkswagen Polo - could not avoid when the boulder rolled downhill from a cliff and hit the front left side of the car.

However, the driver escaped unscathed.

The incident caused traffic congestion as far as one kilometer in both directions of the road.


Meanwhile, State Fire and Rescue Department spokesman informed that they received the call and rushed to the scene immediately after.

Upon arriving at the scene, police found the Volkswagen car crushed by the 20-tonne boulder and the other car – a Proton Persona – was only hit in the rear window with a stone fragment.

Efforts are underway by the authorities to move the boulder.

Meanwhile, officials from the Works Department who were at the scene said that it will do the necessary to prevent from more rocks from falling from the hillside.
