Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's move to apologise for amending the Federal Constitution on the role of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong when he was the prime minister, showed that he was not a visionary leader.

UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the amendment had clearly shown that it was only implemented for his own interest during his tenure as the prime minister.

"Tun Dr Mahathir during the time (the amendment was made) wanted to gain full authority, thus he amended the law and only today said that he regretted the decision," he told reporters after opening the Pasir Puteh UMNO delegates meeting, here, today.

Yesterday, Dr Mahathir in his latest post in Chedet.cc, admitted that the amendment had caused the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's assent to be no longer necessary before a new Act of Parliament comes into force.

Ahmad Shabery, who is also the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister, said the public must realise that the Federal Constitution was a constitution that had been thought through by lawmakers during the time of our "grandparents and ancestors" and it has certain values and importance.

He said Dr Mahathir could only blame himself now on all the mistakes he committed during his 22 years as prime minister.

Earlier during his speech, Ahmad Shabery asked UMNO members to continue being united if they were keen to get the support of voters in the 14th General Election, soon.

Pasir Puteh UMNNO division chief Zawawi Othman meanwhile said his division would continue to stand firmly behind the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
