Police here denied a that man died while in the police lock-up at the Melaka Tengah district police headquarters (IPD) yesterday.

Melaka police chief Datuk Abd Jalil Hassan said on the contrary the man died while receiving treatment at the Melaka Hospital, after being taken there as he had complained of being ill to a policeman at the IPD.

"The information (died while in custody) is not true, he died at the Melaka Hospital when seeking treatment," he said when contacted by Bernama here today.

However, he declined to comment in detail on the incident as it was still under investigation, including the cause of death of the individual.

A news portal today reported a Suaram statement claiming that an individual K.Partiban, 34, died while in police custody.
