This year's celebration of Deepavali is set for Oct 23, Cabinet, Constitution and Inter-Government Relations Division of the Prime Minister's Department announced today.

The federal government via a gazette notification on Oct 6, 2013 also announced that the change in date of Deepavali was made by the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple Dhevasthanam based on the new panjangam calculation.

The temple board secretary stated that the consultation was made with various of religious bodies in India before derived the change in date of Deepavali celebration as the Hindu calendar changes in relation to planet movements.

Based on Hindu calendar, Deepavali will celebrate by the Hindus on 'Saturthasi Thidi' which is the 14th day of the month of 'Iypasi'.

The celebration will start at dawn on Oct 22 and end at dawn on Oct 23.
