A policeman was killed while another fractured his leg when the patrol car they were in rammed into a trailer at Km 78 of Jalan Johor Baharu-Ayer Hitam near here, early today.

Kluang police chief ACP Mohamad Laham said in the 1.30am incident, the deceased, identified as Corporal Basri Yaacob, 34, was on patrol duty with his colleague, Lance Corporal Mohd Amirul Hakim Abd Latif, 31, in an operation dubbed 'Ops Kargo Simpang Renggam'.

He said the patrol car hit at the back of the trailer which was parked by the roadside.

Investigations revealed that the one-way road was in good condition, there were no pot holes and it was well-lit, he said.

Mohamad Laham said the trailer driver escaped injury.

The deceased, who was attached to the Kluang district police headquarters' Patrol Car Branch, died while being treated at Kluang Hospital.

Meanwhile, the surviving victim was now warded and reportedly stable at the same hospital.

The case is now being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
