Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd today launched 11 new channels, including a selection of Bahasa Malaysia, Chinese and Tamil contents.

The company, the biggest Pay-TV provider in the country, also announced five new packages to add value and cater to the customer’s budget and viewing needs.

“We are committed to providing the best viewing and customer experience to Astro’s 3.58 million and growing customer base with greater choice of content which is available via wider range of price-points to suit our customers’ needs.

“We provide our customers with the flexibility to choose from over 20 packages to best suit their viewing needs and budget.

“Our customers will be pleased to know that they can now enjoy their favourite programmes in HD via our new Family HD pack, with 40 SD channels and 11 High Definition channels, at an affordable RM49.95,” Astro chief commercial officer Liew Swee Lin said at the launch of its flagship Astro Lifestyle Centre in Mid Valley Magamall today.

The 11 new channels are namely a new Hokkien channel Astro Hua Hee Dai HD, Astro’s second Malay HD Channel Astro Maya HD, Mandarin channel Astro Quan Jia HD, and Tamil channels Raj TV, Kalaignar TV, Jaya TV, Vijay TV.

There will also be two new sports channels Astro SuperSport 3 HD, Astro SuperSport 4; a female-focused lifestyle channel called Lifetime SD; and an expansion of Astro On Demand content with a new HD channel.

With the new additions, Astro now has at least 170 channels.

Besides the basic pack, Astro have also introduced Value Packs, namely Nilai, Naama and Wah Value Packs in HD at RM75 each for customers who want the best of vernacular channels in HD.

Value Pack customers can also ‘add-on’ other genres like Sports and Movies at an additional RM25 each as well as Mini packs at RM12 each to the Value Pack.

Meanwhile, Astro chief operating officer Henry Tan said, “At Astro, we offer compelling content that is relevant to the lifestyle needs of our customers. We’re committed to keep innovating our content to engage our viewers not only on television but on a 360° experience, on-air, on-ground and online.

Tan also said that customers on the subscription-free NJOI service will be able to watch three new channels – namely NTV7, 8TV and TV AlHijrah-- thus bringing the total channels offered on NJOI to 22 channels.”
