Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is confident that he will escape from being convicted in his second sodomy case.

Speaking to local and international reporters at the Federal Court in Putrajaya after the closing arguments by the defence team, Anwar praised the commitment showed by his team during the session.

Anwar was represented by four lawyers - Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram, N. Surendran, Sangeet Deo Kaur and Ramkarpal Singh.

“They were good during their submissions. I believe after this, there will be no more reason or reasonable argument to convict me to this accusation, not to mention efforts to increase the given sentence,” said the former opposition leader who continuously used the term ‘planned conspiracy’ while referring to the nature of the case.

The prosecution team lead by lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah is ready with strong arguments for the submission which begins tomorrow and continued next Monday.

“He is confident that he will win. You have to be confident with your case and arguments. That is the reason why an appeal proceeding was executed by them. If you are not confident, then an appeal will have no meaning.

“It is the same for us (defence team). We are confident in our arguments. There are two sides in any situation. We can answer all the issue brought up by the prosecutions team.

“That is the beauty of the law,” said Muhammad Shafee who did not rule out the possibility of a retrial.
