Alcoholic beverage logos will no longer be allowed to 'enhance' signboards and retractable awnings of premises located within the Malacca Historic City Council (MBMB) administration area, especially in Malacca City effective last September, said mayor Datuk Zainal Abu.

He said owners of these premises would be given a period of six months from the expiry date of their business and advertising license this year to change the signboards according to this regulation.

"With this ruling, a total of 14,400 premises will be affected and by the beginning of 2016 we expect to see no more alcoholic beverage logos at premises within MBMB's administrative area, especially in Malacca City.

"Should premise owners fail to abide by this ruling after being served with three notices, they will be compounded RM250 under the Advertisement By-Laws (MPMT) 1983 and their signboards will be taken down," he told reporters after surveying signboards along Jalan Ong Kim Wee here, Friday.

Meanwhile, Zainal said the MBMB would ensure that all signboards installed within its administrative jurisdiction especially in the City of Malacca are tourist friendly.

"We do not want the signboards to confuse foreign visitors, we want to assist them in identifying premises and their destination easily and quickly, " he said.
