After winning the gold medal and setting a new record at the IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha, Qatar last year, national elite paralympian Abdul Latif Romly wants to achieve more.

"I succeeded in recording 7.46 metres (in the long jump) at the Malaysia Games in Sarawak (in July). Based on that, I target to clinch the gold medal at the Rio Paralympics.

"I only need a correct my jumping technique. Hopefully, I can achieve my target to win the gold medal in Rio and break the world record," the 19-year-old from Beseri, Perlis told Bernama.

At the IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha, Abdul Latif succeeded in winning the gold medal and simultaneously creating a new championship record in the T20 (learning problem/intellectual disability) long jump by recording 7.35 metres.

However, he did want to feel overly pressured and over-confident on the day of competition.

The National Sport Council's Paralympic Division identified Abdul Latif as a medal hope at the Rio de Janeiro Paralympic Games from Sept 7 to 18.

"I do not want to turn it (gold target) into a pressure, but on the other hand, I will endeavour to do my best," said Abdul Latif, who was also given the honour to carry the national flag during the opening ceremony.

According to the tall and slim young athlete, who is never without a smile, the privilege (of carrying the Jalur Gemilang) was a very big honour.

"I will always compete with determination for Malaysia," he said.

Abdul Latif, together with 20 other athletes, left for Rio de Janeiro today.

The national contingent will be taking part in eight of the 23 events, namely athletics, cycling, powerlifting, archery, ping-pong, sailing, wheelchair tennis and swimming.

To date, Malaysia have yet to win a gold medal in the Paralympic Games.

Eight years ago in London, the national paralympic contingent brought home a silver medal via Hasihin Sanawi in the W1/W2 individual recurve and a bronze medal via Muhammad Ziyad Zolkefli in the T20 shot put event.
