The number of dengue deaths this year as of last Sunday stands at 94 people, an increase of 224 per cent as compared to the corresponding period last year, according to the Health Ministry.

Selangor recorded the highest fatalities at 38 people as compared to seven people last year while Johor experienced 14 deaths, double the number last year, the ministry said in a statement here today.

The ministry said Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya recorded eight dengue fatalities as compared to seven last year.

It said only Labuan and Perlis have not recorded any dengue fatalities so far.

According to the ministry, the total number of dengue cases reported so far this year as of last Sunday stood at 51,987 cases as compared to only 14,755 cases for the same period last year.

The Petaling district in Selangor recorded the highest number of dengue case in the country at 12,518 cases or 30 per cent of the 51,987 cases reported, according to the statement.

It added that the ministry had mobilised 32 teams involving 95 personnel including from other districts to complement local authority efforts to combat the menace in the district since last Monday.

The ministry hoped the measure would help reduce dengue cases and fatalities in the Petaling District, the statement added.
