The flood situation in Sarawak worsened as the number of flood victims increased to 3,230 last night but conditions in Melaka and Johor continued to improve.

In SARAWAK, according Civil Defence Department (CDD) public relations officer Siti Huzaimah Ibrahim, as of 8pm, 3,230 people from 829 families in Kuching and Bau had been placed in relief centres, compared to 2,679 at 5pm.

She said the increase was due to the king tide colliding with water from the upper reaches of the state, affecting villages along rivers.

In MELAKA, the number of flood victims dropped to 96 people from 25 families as at 8pm, compared to 119 from 28 families at 5pm.

Melaka CDD director Effendy Ali said all the remaining victims were placed at the relief centre in SK Belimbing Dalam, Durian Tunggal, Alor Gajah.

In JOHOR, a Segamat Flood Management Committee spokesman said only one relief centre remained open at SK Spang Loi as of 8pm tonight, housing 10 victims from 2 families.
