One person dead and five others injured after a concrete structure at a construction site near KL Eco City in Bangsar, near here, collapsed today.

The 21-year-old Vietnamese worker succumbed to head and body injuries when the 70-metre pedestrian bridge under construction on Jalan Bangsar gave way, while the five injured workers were sent to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre.

According to the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Operations Centre, the incident happened around 3.30pm and a distress call was received at 3.33pm following which teams from the Pantai, Hang Tuah and Seputeh stations were immediately dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, it was observed that the 70-metre two-storey elevated pedestrian walkway linking KL Eco City to The Gardens which is part of the KL Eco City project in Kampung Haji Abdullah Hukum, had collapsed.

Meanwhile, Brickfields police chief ACP Shahrul Othman Mansor said that rescue operations are currently focused on retrieving another individual believed to be buried underneath the rubble of the collapsed structure.


Project developer SP Setia said it is still assessing the situation and is working closely with the relevant authorities.

"The number of casualties is still being determined. As of the statement release time, one worker died. The team is unable to provide further details as investigations are ongoing. We deeply regret the incident and will update in due course," the company said in a statement.
