Malaysians should give more generous support to the works of local artists as they could enhance racial unity and boost the economic development of the tourism and culture sectors of the country, said Socio-Cultural Adviser to the Government, Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim.

He said the works of local artists which highlighted the ideas, emotions and stories of local elements on human life could educate the people profoundly in various aspects.

"The inspiration of Negeri Sembilan artist, Cheah Thien Soong with works in ink depicts the environment as well as eastern and western cultures.

This is among the works of the highest value," he said after opening the Cheah Thien Soong Exhibition: Nanyang Ink Drawing at the National Visual Arts Gallery here today.

Rais said art and culture are a reflection of the people so the inheriting generation should support local artists by preserving such high quality works.

"The art pieces on display today is the product of a Chinese artist but whose values can be felt by all races and even the community at international level, indeed it has drawn us closer together," he said.

Rais said therefore all parties especially private companies should support local art works by purchasing such art pieces to enable them expand their career.

Earlier in his speech, Rais said art products were more in demand and were contributing to the national economy through increasing interest as the art festival held last year grossed RM21.06 million compared to RM19.3 million in 2013.
