Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today questioned why ministers and those found to be living beyond their means are not investigated but instead those who report such cases are subjected to police investigation.

“It is sad to see favoritism in criminal investigations. Today, Malaysia is listed among the countries where corruption is rampant,” he wrote in his blog today.

Dr Mahathir said when he was still practising, his clinic was often raided by the Inland Revenue Board and was forced to pay additional tax as his explanation was not accepted by the officers.

“But what is strange and wrong is the refusal by the relevant government agencies to take action on the claims and police reports on the missing 1MDB funds, which is a government-owned company,” he said referring to the 1Malaysia Development Fund.

Instead, Dr Mahathir said the person who made police reports were made bankrupt, house seized and investigated for allegedly funding terrorism activities and money laundering.

He said all Malaysians are bound by the same set of laws and called on the government not to discriminate or play favoritism in enforcing the laws.

Former UMNO Batu Kawan division vice-chairman Datuk Paduka Khairuddin Abu Hassan sparked controversies after he lodged a police report against 1MDB and the risks the debt-ridden government-owned company is facing.

Subsequent to this episode, the UMNO Youth division has demanded for UMNO Disciplinary Committee to probe into Khairuddin’s status and role.

He was later found to be a bankrupt and removed form his position. His house 'auctioned off' for some RM2 million in January.
