Malaysians are urged to use water wisely and not to take it for granted during the El Nino phenomenon that is sweeping the country at the moment.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the water level at seven major dams in five states have reached critical levels, which is below the 50 per cent mark.

The seven dams are Padang Saga, Muda and Beris in Kedah, Labong in Johor, Bukit Kwong in Kelantan, Timah Tasoh in Perlis and Bukit Merah in Perak.

However, he said the situation would not have an immediate impact on the supply of clean water.

"Although there is a drop in the water level at the dams, the authorities concerned can still supply clean water to the consumers," he told reporters after opening the Asia Water Resources forum 2016 at Kuala Lumpur Convention Center.

Wan Junaidi also called on Federal and state governments to work together in addressing the water issue, while calling on some states to review their free water policy.
