The Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Ministry enforcement team has detained two traders for hiding sugar supply in their premises in Putrajaya on Friday.

Minister Datuk Hasan Malek said action had also been taken against them under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011.

"Sugar is still one of the controlled items and we will not hesitate to take action against those who try to raise the price of sugar at their whims and fancy," he told reporters during the "Jom Check Motor" programme at Taman Mahsuri, Sungai Limau Dalam Saturday.

Hasan said the operators were obviously trying to take advantage of the government's decision to abolish sugar subsidy, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak when tabling the 2014 Budget yesterday, to make a quick profit.

With the announcement, the price of sugar has been increased by 34 sen per kilogramme effective Saturday.
