A man and a woman were burnt to death when the car they were travelling in, skidded and rammed into a Telekom Malaysia (TM) utility box before bursting into flames at the 12km Jalan Bakri-Muar here early today.

The deceased were identified as driver, Jakson, 55, and Chan Choon Siang, 35.

The front passenger, Lyette Lim, 44, who sustained a fractured shoulder was warded at the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital here.

Muar police chief ACP Azman Ayob said in the 4am incident, the occupants of the car were heading to Bakri from Air Hitam.

He said initial investigations revealed the driver had lost control of the vehicle before it crashed into the utility box and burst into flames.

Meanwhile in KELANTAN, a rubber tapper lost his wife, teenage son and grand-daughter when the Proton Saga the trio were travelling in, collided head-on with a Nissan Bluebird early today in Tanah Merah.

The 1.39am crash occurred at the 89km Jalan Kota Bharu-Machang-Jeli in Batang Merbau.

The deceased were Sidik Awang's wife, Paridah Ismail, 54, son, Muhamad Saiful, 17, and grand-daughter Nur Assyifa Muhamd Shaharil, three, and Nissan Bluebird car driver Mohd Roza Ismail, 38.

Sidik, 60, said prior to the crash, he and his eight family members were on their way to Muadzam Shah in two separate vehicles to pick up my child who had just finished studies at a polytechnic over there.

He said he was driving a car with his three children in the same vehicle ahead of the Proton Saga when he realised the latter vehicle was out of sight.

"I called my wife who was in the Proton Saga but the call went unanswered. We turned back and that's when I received a call from my other family members who said my wife was involved in an accident," he said.

Two others sustained serious injuries, namely the driver of the Proton Saga car, Muhamad Shaharil Sidik, 31, and his sister, Suhaila Sidik, 23.

The deceased's remains were buried at the Kampung Lubuk Bungor Muslim cemetery in Jeli after Asar prayers. -- Bernama
