A labourer of Indian nationality was sentenced to three years' jail and two strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court here today for trading in prostitution.

Judge Azwarnida Affandi handed down the sentence on B.Gnanasekaran, 36, who changed his not guilty plea to guilty after the charge was read out to him again today.

He was ordered to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest which was last Nov 8.

Gnanasekaran was charged with committing the offence at No 8-10-08, Jalan PJS 9/1, Pangsapuri Lagoon, Bandar Sunway here, at 4 pm last Oct 8.

The charge, under Section 372A of the Penal Code, provides an imprisonment for up to 15 years with whipping and fine, on conviction.

In mitigation, lawyer Mohd Redzuan Mohamed Yusoff, representing Gnanasekaran, said his client was forced into prostitution to earn extra income to support his mother, who is sick, in India, but that he was now remorse and apologised for his action.
