Suppliers have prepared a three-month stockpile of essential food items in anticipation of a flood in the country, said Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Alias Ahmad.

He said there were 1,400 suppliers nationwide and they had been told to make the necessary preparations for the flood.

"The ministry had made the necessary preparations to ensure there is uninterrupted supply of food items, like rice, sugar, flour, cooking oil and cooking gas should there be floods.

"From checks conducted nationwide, the suppliers have assured there is sufficient supply for the next three months," he told reporters after a visit to one of the suppliers, Keluarga Utama Sdn Bhd, in Perai here Saturday.

He said the ministry had also formed a special team to assist the relevant agencies, including the disaster action committees at the state and district levels in getting food supplies for flood victims.
