The happiness of a group of teenagers on a picnic outing at Sungai Sendat was cut short when one of them tragically drowned there this afternoon.

Hulu Selangor district police chief, Supt R.Supramaniamsaid the incident occurred at around 12.40pm, when the victim, Zulhilmie, 16, and his 20 friends reached the area by motorcycle from Klang.

"Upon arrival, Zulhilmie, who didn't know how to swim, went for a bath at the waterfall on the second floor with his friends and was swept away by the strong current, causing him to drown," said Supramaniam.

Speaking to Bernama yesterday, he said the victim's friends were not able to save him as the incident happened rather fast, but with the help of the public and forest rangers they were able to locate the victim's body 30 minutes later at the riverbank.

Supramaniamsaid the victim was then brought toKuala Kubu Baharu Hospitalfor apostmortem.

Meanwhile, in another incident at Bukit Lagong Forest Reserve, a teenage boy, 18, V.Harihanan, who came from Kepong, drowned in his final dive in the river.

Gombak police chief ACP Ali Ahmad said the victim, arrived at the picnic area at 3pm with his four friends and went on to bathe there for three hours.

Speaking to Bernama, Ali said, Harihanan refused to stop and proceeded with his deadly dive, and tragically drowned in front of his friends, he added.

The case was classified as a sudden death.

Ali said with the help of thepublic theymanaged to bring the victim's body out of the river.

The body was sent to Selayang Hospital for a post mortem.
