The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry has confirmed today that there would not be any increase in the price of sugar for the time being despite requests from manufacturers to revise the price of the commodity.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said the price of sugar remained at RM2.84 per kilogram (kg), although there is speculation that the price of the essential good would increase.

"There is no increase in the price of sugar this time around, although there is demand from the commodity's manufacturers to raise its price.

"Do not believe what is viral on social media because whatever the decision, it takes into account the interests of all, including manufacturers," he said through the ministry's official Facebook page, today.

The current price of sugar is the same since the last time it was reviewed by the government in 2013, prior to which, sugar price was RM2.50 per kg.
