A final-year chemical engineering student had invented a device that uses body heat to charge smartphones.

The device, attached to one’s arm, converts body heat and surrounding temperatures into electricity.

University Technology Petronas (UTP)’s P. Sukesh Pandian said the idea came about a year ago.

“I am a heavy Smartphone user. I use the Internet a lot and as a result my battery dies fast and I am forced to charge my phone every 3 or 4 hours,” said Sukesh when contacted by Astro AWANI.

He said most people are heavily dependent on power banks but that also need to be charged.

Looking for an environmental-friendly solution, Sukesh came up with the device, called STATS Charger.

Though is it attached to ones arm, Sukesh said it does not harm the user.

“I have done the experiment and in the first stage of prototype, I must say the results were pretty impressive,” he said adding that he is currently experimenting with how to make the device more user-friendly

However, he is stuck now as he does not have the funds needed to bring his invention to the global world.

“I need to bring this invention to the United States’s Material Science & Technology Competition 2014, which will be taking place on Oct 12 to Oct 17,” he said.

His mother, a single mother who teaches at a kindergarten in Klang, could not fork out the RM16,000 needed for the trip.

The amount would cover his flight ticket fare, visa application fee, accommodation, registration fee for the competition, food and traveling allowances.

Sukesh had sought help via Facebook and his status had been shared over 1,000 times by family and friends, including politicians in the country.

He said he had initially went through his university for funding but said it was rejected.

“No specific reason was given for the rejection. The university probably did not see a potential in this project or maybe they don’t have funds,” he said.

“I didn’t want to appeal again because I was running out of time. I only have a month left,” he said.

Sukesh is confident that his invention will bring fame to the country.
