The Higher Education Ministry today set up a special committee to investigate yesterday's go-kart accident in Indera Mahkota in which two spectators died.

The Special Investigation Committee will find out the cause of the accident that resulted in the death of a man and his daughter who were among the spectators at the Educational Innovation of Motorsports and Automotive Race (EIMARACE) 2016, said ministry secretary-general Tan Sri Dr Noorul Ainur Mohd Nur.

He said Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh had ordered the setting up of the committee and added that the probe would cover all aspects.

"The committee will have representatives from the organisers and officers from the ministry," he told reporters after visiting severely injured Muhammad Izz Danial Izwan, seven, at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital here.

Dr Noorul Ainur was accompanied by Universiti Teknology Malaysia vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Wahid Omar.

Muhammad Izz's sister, Nur Zulaikha, five, and the children's father, Izwan Isa, 39, were killed after a go-kart veered out of control and crashed into spectators at Jalan Sukpa in Indera Mahkota.

The children's mother, Siti Suhaiza Seman, 38, was slightly injured.

It is learnt that the accident happened after three go-karts brushed against one another during the race and one of them veered out of control and rammed spectators. -- Bernama
