Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah said there were politicians who did not understand the role and power of the Royal institution because they have their own agenda.

“I realise that there are politicians who do not understand the role and power of the royal institution, or they pretend not to because I am sure they have their own agenda,” he said in his speech at the swearing-in ceremony of the new state executive councillors today.

He said the Selangor state had always been run in accordance with the Selangor State Constitution 1959 and added that the Ruler’s role is not limited to ceremonies and official functions only.

“Because the people were not given the right information of the functions of a Sultan, they think the royal institution is only serves as a symbolic purpose with no power under the state’s constitution,” he said.

“As a Sultan, I have and will always lead the state in accordance with the Selangor State Constitution 1959," he decreed.

Sultan Sharafuddin also said the people of Selangor are free to practise their own religions and faiths in the state and live in harmony.

He blamed the political crisis which engulfed the state for weeks on PKR and its engineered ‘Kajang move’.

He said the move also brought false accusations against the then Menteri Besar, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

The Ruler said the negative activities continued to be carried out despite the holy Ramadan month where the Muslims should have been carrying out ibadah.

“But PKR continued with their agenda despite the holy Ramadan month with its accusations,” he said.

He said the Menteri Besar crisis had opened the Ruler’s eyes and heart on the political lanscape in the state.

“Politicians come and go. They serve for five years and might be replaced in the coming elections. But my position as Sultan and Ruler of Selangor will continue until the end of my days,” he said.

He said as the state’s Ruler, he bore heavy responsibility to ensure the people of Selangor live in peace and progress.

“I do not interfere in the state’s administration, run by the Menteri Besar but I only advise the Menteri Besar if there are issues that could bring difficulties to the people,” he said.
