Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak called on Malaysians to display their spirit of patriotism by flying the "Jalur Gemilang" in conjunction with the 60th Merdeka Day celebration and the hosting of the 2017 Sea Games by the country this month.

He said the response from the public to fly the national flag was lukewarm despite various programmes outlined for the Merdeka month celebration, such as lectures, screening of movies on the struggle for independence and public discussions.

He said the perception that flying the national flag was merely symbolic and not a priority to show pride for the country should be dismissed.

"It is this attitude that made Malaysians to take lightly the need to fly the Jalur Gemilang because that spirit of patriotism, which is still strong among Malaysians should not just be buried in the heart.

"With "Negaraku Sehati Sejiwa' as this year's National Day theme, it is apt that we unite to celebrate National Day together," he said on his blog at sskeruak.blogspot.my today.

Salleh said this year's National Day celebration should be merrier with Malaysia playing host for the 2017 Sea Games to be held from Aug 19 to 30.

"Show other countries how strong is the patriotic spirit of Malaysians. Show them that we are a nation of high moral and culture, not one that forgets history.

"Come, let's proof that independence is the symbol of Malaysian unity, celebrate our independence day with full of pride," he added.
