PUTRAJAYA: The spirit of the Rukun Negara should continue to be nurtured and inculcated among the people, especially the younger generation, so that it will not be forgotten, said Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

She said the five principles of the Rukun Negara should not remain merely on the lips of the people but should be ingrained into their lifestyle to ensure peace and harmony of the country.
“I still remember, when we were small, we were taught to memorise the Rukun Negara at school. If not us then who else would want to uphold and defend this important philosophy?” she said after attending the launching of the 50th anniversary celebration of Rukun Negara by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin here yesterday.

Meanwhile, Malaysia Unity Foundation trustee Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the Rukun Negara golden jubilee celebration was very important in educating the younger generation to better understand the national philosophy.
He said the private sector and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) should also promote and strengthen the appreciation of Rukun Negara among the people.

“The major issue regarding the Rukun Negara is whether people understand the philosophy of the country.

"The people need to know that Rukun Negara is the key towards maintaining the harmony of the country," he said.

National gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Hadi, 26, said the programme was timely for the people to understand the philosophy better.

"As Malaysians we need to hold steadfastly to the Rukun Negara and use social media to share with other Malaysians about this philosophy," she added.
