The government should place more emphasis on treatment, management and punishment for paedophiles cases reported in the country.

The vice-president of Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said, the Home Affairs Ministry and Auditor-General should be prepared in disclosing sex offenders' names to the public.

Lam Thye was commenting on the threats posed by perpetrators on the security of families and communities, particularly children in Malaysia following the arrest of a Malaysian student in the United Kingdom for possessing pornographic videos and images of children.

Nur Fitri Azmeer Nordin, dubbed to be a Mathematics genius was detained in his room in Terrace London on Nov 21 last year.

"Paedophilia is a serious offence and the crime has spread across many countries especially in poor and underdeveloped countries. These children became victims upon being manipulated by certain syndicates who had preyed on them," said Lam Thye to Astro AWANI, recently.

He stressed that with the establishment of a sex offenders' registry, the ministry as well as the A-G department must accelerate efforts efforts to identify and enforce measures and legislation to keep an eye on sex offenders.

"The most important thing is to prepare the list of names of those convicted of sex crimes. The list then can be used by the authorities to verify and conduct long-term monitoring to keep them of the offenders involved," says Lam Thye.

He added that the information contained in the list of names should be accessible to the public in order to maintain communal protection.

"However, this matter should be discussed in detail as soon as possible by the parties involved," he said.

The Women, Family and Community Development Minister, Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim had recently highlighted the proposals on measures to address the issue of paedophilias in Malaysia.

The proposal also highlighted among others, the need for a list of sexual offenders and that the list need to be separated from other types of common database of criminals.

"Everything now depends on further actions by the Home Affairs Ministry," said Rohani.
