: An investigation paper will be opened on the controversial state sovereign fund, 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) following a police report lodged by Batu Kawan Umno deputy chief Datuk Paduka Khairuddin Abu Hassan.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said, his ministry has also requested the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to carry out an investigation according to procedure after the investigation paper was opened.
“A police report has already been made, so the police will carry out an investigation according to procedure,” he said during a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
He added, the report lodged by Khairuddin was strictly personal and had nothing to do with Umno.
“It has nothing to do with the Malay party, Umno. It’s Khairuddin’s personal report against 1MDB,” he said.
On Friday, Khairuddin had lodged a police report and called for a thorough investigation to address and identify the root of the problem facing 1MDB and its subsidiaries.
He also urged Umno leaders to stop being cowards in raising the issues concerning the future of the debt-ridden government company and the risks it is facing.
His comments came on the heels of Penang Umno Liaison Committee deputy chairman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Nainca Merican’s statement that the former’s actions were always subject to the party’s code of ethics.
However, Reezal said that Penang Umno was in no rush to act against Khairuddin.
Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor has also reportedly urged Khairuddin to retract his police report.
