The Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) raided Malaysiakini office this evening.

The raid was said to be over a report that a deputy public prosecutor was transferred out of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) special operations division published on the news portal Monday.

Malaysiakini reported that a team comprising some 10 officers from the police as well as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) arrived at its office in Petaling Jaya at 5pm.

The officers left around 8pm after recording a statement from the news portal editor-in-chief Steven Gan.

It was reported that the team also seized a computer belonging to him.

The case is being investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code for criminal defamation.

On Wednesday, MCMC had recorded a statement from Gan and a journalist in connection with the Monday's report.

Earlier, attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali denied that the officer, Ahmad Shazalee Abdul Khairi, was transferred out of MACC.

However, according to Malaysiakini, the said report actually made no mention of the transfer.

Gan, when commenting on the incident, said Malaysiakini is willing to cooperate with the authorities but would never disclose the identity of its sources.
