The Education Ministry is investigating the alleged leaks in the Mathematics and Tamils papers of the Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) with police reports lodged over the matter.

Deputy Minister of Education II P. Kamalanathan said the Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will be heading the investigation at ministry level.

“It has also become a police matter and we believe those responsible will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” he told Astro AWANI.

Online portal The Malaysian Insider quoted Kuala Lumpur city police chief Datuk Tajuddin Tajuddin Md Isa saying that Examinations Syndicate officers lodged the police reports on the leaks.

He said the reports will be investigated by the same team which is investigating the leak of Science and English papers.

Heading the special committee to look at the standard operating procedure of the Malaysian Examination Syndicate is former Chief Justice Tun Zaki Tun Azmi.

Last week, the Examinations Board announced the UPSR examination for Science papers 018, 028 and 038 had been postponed to Sept 30 due to its questions being revealed on the Internet.

Following the announcement of the leaks, Muhyiddin who is also the Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister II Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh apologised to all UPSR candidates for the leaks and the delay in their exams.

Police have recorded statements from 30 individuals to facilitate investigation on the leak in the examination papers of this year's UPSR.

Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigation Department head, SAC Gan Kong Meng said the 30 individuals comprised eight officers from the Malaysian Examination Board, 19 teachers, an officer from the Education Ministry, an engineer and a journalist.

"Two reports were lodged today at 11 am by senior officers of the Examination Board on the leaks in Maths and Tamil and we are already investigating this," he told Astro AWANI.

A total of 14 people have been arrested so far from Kuala Lumpur, Kedah, Perak and Negeri Sembilan.

11 of the 14 individuals detained to assist police in the investigation had been released on police bail. The other three individuals are in remand until Monday.

The case is being investigated under Section 8 of the Official Secrets Act 1972.
