Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the police are working with public and private universities to check students from joining and supporting the IS militant group, especially via the social media.

He said the police, via their Anti-Terrorism Unit in the Special Branch, always monitored the students of public and private universities to prevent them from joining and supporting the militant group.

"The monitoring is not only at public and private universities but also on individuals and organisations because certain quarters try to recruit and channel funds to terrorists and would be terrorists who are trained for the IS group in this country," he said.

He said this when asked on the involvements of university students in this country in the militant group.

Ahmad Zahid recently reported that, to date, 100 Malaysians had been confirmed arrested by police on suspicion of involvements in militant groups.

The figure did not include 61 Malaysians who were detected to be in Syria and Iraq and 10 who had been killed.

He said he would table the Prevention of Terrorism Act in Parliament to make improvements in terms of monitoring efforts.

Commenting on the crisis faced by MIC, Ahmad Zahid said he would ensure the Registrar of Societies (RoS) or Barisan Nasional (BN) top leaders would not interfere in the decision of the party to elect the leadership lineup in MIC.

He said reelection at all levels in the party which was a directive from RoS and the suggestion of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, was among the measures to see the end of the crisis in June.

"As the minister responsible over matters of organisations, whereby RoS is also under my jurisdiction. I will ensure no interference by RoS and other quarters who try to influence the election this time.

"With full confidence, we fully leave it to the MIC leadership to solve the problem and turn MIC into a party supported by the Indian community especially in the socio-political interest of the community in the country," he said.

Earlier, Ahmad Zahid opened the 225th Prison's Day and Passing out Parade of Prison Officers at the Prison Officer Training Centre, here, today.
