The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry plans to make Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) as the minimum qualification for nursery caregivers from next year.

Its Deputy Minister, Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun said the move was still being studied and it was seen as an effort of the government to raise the quality of childcare at such institutions.

"Even though registered nursery nannies underwent childcare courses, many of them do not have SPM qualification.

"The proposal is among various aspects being studied as we are looking at revamping nursery regulations.

"If the measure is proven to raise the quality (of childcare), we may limit the qualification of childminders to diploma or degree, but not so soon as we do not want to burden nursery operators." --Bernama
