Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) will be launching a campaign to urge the Malaysian Royal Police (PDRM) to re-open the murder case of Mongolian model, Altantuya Shaariibuu.

PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli said he firmly believed that the people should focus in pressuring Inspector General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar to reopen the case following the accused and important witness of the case, Sirul Azhar Umar who had stated his readiness to give fresh statement.

He said PKR will launch the campaign in a large scale throughout the country with all PKR branch chairmen and state assemblymen to lodge police reports urging the police to re-open the case.

“And then, we will update on Twitter the police report numbers so that the IGP can also focus on the murder case, not just what the people say on Twitter and Facebook,” he said in a press conference at the PKR headquarters, today.

Rafizi said, based on discussions with several members of Parliament from Australia, Sirul cannot provide television or media interviews without the clearance from the Australian government.

“PKR is now in the midst of obtaining help from our Australian MP friends to make a formal application to their government to allow Sirul to be interviewed,” he said.

Sirul Azhar is currently being held in an Australian immigration centre following a red alert issued by Interpol.

In an interview with online portal Malaysiakini, Sirul Azhar said he was under orders in the murder case. He said he is mulling a tell-all interview with Australian media on the case.

Last month, the Federal Court had issued a warrant of arrest on Sirul who did not turn up in court for the verdict. In criminal proceedings, the accused person should be present in court when his case is called up in court.

The Court had overturned the acquittal of Azilah, 38, and Sirul Azhar, 43, for the murder Altantuya and sentenced them to the gallows.
