Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir has warned state assemblymen not to try protecting or shielding criminals.

He said everyone including state assemblymen should cooperate by reporting to the authorities on criminal activities in their constituencies.

"The state government is concerned with social issues and criminal activities as nobody wants them to happen.

"As such we should not be their (criminals) guardians. To prevent crimes we must be committed in fighting them," he said when replying to a supplementary question from Abu Bakar Hussian (PAS-Titi Serong) in the state assembly sitting here, today.

Abu Bakar wanted to know the measures being taken by the state in promoting social development and addressing the rising crime rate.

The assembly was also told that the fisheries and agricultural departments were now sourcing for new markets for the widely cultivated arowana fish from Kerian.

State Rural Development, Agriculture, Farming, Information and Human Capital Development Committee chairman Datuk Saarani Mohamad said this was necessary as the price of the fish had been badly affected in China.

"We are trying to explore the Japanese and Taiwanese markets instead of concentrating on the Chinese market where the price had dropped significantly," he said when replying to a question from Abdul Yunus Jamhari (PKR-Kuala Kurau).

He said currently there are 325 aquaculture farmers operating in the Kerian district.

"Some 32 operators are cultivating fish and shrimps in brackish water ponds, 128 fish farmers are employing the sea cage system while 18 others are farming in freshwater ponds," he added.

Meanwhile State Women Development, Social Welfare, Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Rusnah Kassim said the state government was looking for conclusive evidence to identify the source of contamination in Sungai Bernam in Muallim district.

She said the relevant departments including the Fisheries, Environment and Veterinary departments have been urged to take follow-up actions.

"The Fisheries Department has taken water samples from the river and they were found to have high ammonia levels.

"It has not been confirmed if the source of ammonia is from one particular chicken farm as other farms are also using fertilisers," she said.

She was commenting on a newspaper report which claimed that the income of some 200 inland fishermen were affected due to contamination of Sungai Bernam.
