The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry would set up a one-stop centre for single mothers at Urban Transformation Centres (UTC) nationwide beginning June, this year.

Its deputy minister Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun said the initiative would facilitate the registration process for single mothers and enable them to receive the necessary services.

"We are always sensitive and focused in ensuring the well-being of every target group in line with the development of the country," she said at a Sabah Single Mothers Empowerment Action Plan roadshow here Tuesday.

Meanwhile, she said there are 82,200 single mothers in Malaysia as of March this year as recorded by the Women's Development Department.

She said 750 new registrations had also been received during the roadshow.

The definition of a single mother in this context is, a woman who is divorced, or married with children but whose husband is unemployed, or unmarried but with children under her care, Azizah told reporters after the programme.
