Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd is committed to extend its full cooperation to the police and relevant authorities on any actions required to ensure the safety of airport users, said its managing director Datuk Badlisham Ghazali.

He said the airport operator had been engaging closely with all the relevant parties, such as the Health Ministry, to facilitate any measures that were required.

"Our priority is always to ensure passengers' security and safety," he said in a statement issued by Malaysia Airport here today.

The statement was issued following the disclosure that a highly toxic substance was used in the murder of a North Korean national at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2).

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar revealed today that the substance, believed to have been used in the murder of Kim Jong-nam on Feb 13, was 'VX nerve agent', which is listed as a chemical weapon.

Jong-nam was at klia2 on Feb 13 to board a flight to Macau when two women suddenly appeared before him and wiped his face with the palms of their hands which contained a poisonous liquid.

Jong-nam, who travelled with a passport bearing the name Kim Chol, sought help at a customer service counter at the airport and was rushed to the Putrajaya Hospital but died on the way.

Malaysia Airports said they had checked with Menara Clinic at klia2 terminal and there had been no anomalies on the medical cases reported at the clinic since the date of the incident.

It also said as a safety precaution, they had sent the customer service staff who attended to the victim for a medical check-up and the medical report stated that she was in good health.

Malaysia Airports said that the Health Ministry had advised the public to not worry as had there been any exposure, those exposed would have shown signs and symptoms immediately or within 18 hours after the exposure.

The airport operator said they had in place a standard daily cleaning process that involved scrubbing the floor using the Ride-On-Scrubber machine with multipurpose cleaning chemical and water and the process was performed six times daily at klia2 terminal.

"Apart from that, all toilets are also washed down nightly. We have also been informed that the cleaning staff are in good health," it said.

Malaysia Airports also welcomed the police's efforts on additional initiatives to further ensure the safety of passengers and staff at the airport.

Badlisham said Malaysia Airports had also been keeping all its key stakeholders including the airlines informed of any developments. - BERNAMA
