The Negeri Sembilan government views seriously the reported closure of the Sungai Semenyih water treatment plant last Sunday due to odour pollution of the river water, with the Nilai industrial area suspected to be the source of the problem.

State Public Amenities, Environment, Cooperatives and Consumerism Action Committee chairman, Datuk Abu Ubaidah Redza said in light of this, the Negeri Sembilan Department of Environment had conducted an operation to determine the source of the pollution.

This, he said, was conducted together with the Nilai Municipal Council, Negeri Sembilan Water Regulatory Body, State Drainage and Irrigation Department and Negeri Sembilan Forestry Department.

"The action taken was based on the NBOS (National Blue Ocean Strategy) as we (state government) view this matter seriously.

"The departments and agencies involved will also check on compliance with the Environmental Quality Act 1974 by the premises under their respective jurisdiction," he told Bernama yesterday.

Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) in its statement last Sunday said the Sungai Semenyih water treatment plant was closed at 7.30am, due to odour pollution of the river water, with the Nilai industrial area suspected to be the source. -- Bernama
