The National Security Council (NSC) Bill will be tabled during this Parliamentary session as part of transformation measures taken by the government in reviewing the roles played by the NSC.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the government views the threat of terrorism as seriously and is taking appropriate measures to address the issue.

“The government is in the midst of strengthening the NSC in a bid to make it more efficient and effective in coordinating the policies and strategies related to national security,” he said when answering a question from Datuk Noor Ehsanuddin Mohd Harun Narrashid (BN-Kota Tinggi) in Parliament today.

Noor Ehsanuddin had asked the Prime Minister to explain the government’s measures to transform the NSC and make it more effective in current times.

Najib said, the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) of the NSC would also be reviewed to ensure the directives issued are still relevant when faced with the challenges today.

“The directives issued by the NSC and its SOP would be reviewed to ensure it is still relevant and can be used in the current environment.

“This includes the strengthening of its mechanisms at the state level,” he said.

He added, a national security policy will also be formulated to serve as a guideline for security agencies in the country.
