Students who excel in their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations should be given discounts when applying for a motorcycle license, the Dewan Rakyat was told on Thursday.

Datuk Irmohizam Ibrahim (BN-Kuala Selangor) when making the proposal said the students could be given a discount of up to 50 per cent, especially to help those less fortunate to get a license so that they could ride a motorcycle to school.

"Although the ceiling price of obtaining a motorcycle license has been set, it is still found that many students using motorcycles to get to school do not have a license, because they cannot afford it.

"If the discount is given, it will help them get a license, in addition to encouraging them to excel in their studies," he said when debating the Road Transport (Amendment) Bill 2016.

Meanwhile, Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Ab Aziz Kaprawi when winding up the debate on thebill saidthe ministry, through the Road Transport Department had reduced the cost of obtaining the B2 motorcycle license through the MyLesenprogramme.

He said through theprogramme, applicants only needed to pay RM299 to get a motorcycle license, and since its launch in September last year, a total of 63,000 applicants had registered, and 50per centhad managed to get their license.
