The mountain guides operating in Mount Kinabalu will be given earthquake emergency lessons, said Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan.

He said this is important as the mountain guides are the first to respond to earthquake emergencies.

In a statement today, Abdul Rahman said he had instructed the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM) to introduce ways to prepare for earthquakes and how to save lives during and after earthquakes.

Abdul Rahman said the department will provide the mountain guides with suitable equipments for safety exercises.

“At the same time, JBPM will place suitable equipments on the mountaintops near Laban Rata and at the Taman Sabah office near the foot of the mountain.

“By doing this, the mountain guides with an abundance of experience in the topography of the mountain can help the initial search and rescue work when a disaster occurs,"he said.

On Friday, an earthquake, measuring 6.0 magnitude hit Sabah.
