In-patients at hospitals no longer have to worry about pushing or dragging their drip stand to toilets or anywhere away from their bed now that there is a Mobile Intravenous Drip (MIV).

A lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Science, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), Assoc Prof Dr Ahmad Najib Azmi said the new invention provides a solution to problems faced by many patients on drip.

"The use of drip stand limit movement of the patients, but with MIV, it will be easy for patients to move around as it uses a specialised strap and hook to hold the drip bottle.

"It is simple and user-friendly," he told Bernama in an interview recently.

MIV was among products which were awarded the gold medal at the 2016 International Invention and Innovation Exhibition (ITEX) held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre last May.

It was developed by a team from USIM's Faculty of Medicine and Health Science, comprising Ahmad Najib and another lecturer and five students.

Ahmad Najib said the use of MIV would also make it easier for Muslim patients to perform their prayers.

"We visited the hospital wards to know problems facing dengue patients and we noticed that their problem is to move around as they are always on drip," he added.

However, he said, the use of MIV was only suitable for patients aged 18 and above.

"MIV is more practical than drip stand as it is easier to carry, safe and cheaper," he added.

He said USIM had obtained the patent for the invention and hoped to market the product next year.

"We are now waiting for approval from the Health Ministry," he added.
